WHAT TOWN IN THE MOHAWK VALLEY ARE YOU FROM: Mohawk, Van Hornsville, Deerfield, New York Mills
PLEASE TELL YOUR EXTRAORDINARY TALE ABOUT THE MOHAWK VALLEY:
There used to be a field named after a former teacher in the town of Mohawk. When I was a kid, Tolpa field was behind the elementary school. I am not sure if they were related or not, but I knew a girl from Cooperstown with the last name Tolpa.
We went to camp together in the summer once in the late 60’s, (64 I think) and she told me that her grandparents were Polish immigrants that people in the town attacked in the early part of the twentieth century. They tried to burn their house down and beat them up because they didn’t believe in God. She said her grandparents were well know Theosophers and that her whole family were practicing Theosophists.
Then she told me that she didn’t believe in God either that she was into Theosophy. She then explained Theosophy as a kind of anti religion, that theosophy is to explore the origin of divinity, humanity, and the nature of world and the universe. At that point I had no idea what she was talking about. Now that I no longer live in the valley I myself have given up on religion and have since realized that Theosophy may very well be something interesting to think about.
But the most intriguing thing she told me was that her real last name was spelled with a U. Tulpa she claimed was changed to Tolpa when her grandfather arrived at Ellis Island when he came here from Poland.
I never forgot her because she was a very unique girl but I never saw her after that summer we went to camp. Years later one of my girlfriends who is a professor of history at Penn State, and I were out to dinner and she mentioned the word Tulpa. She was reading this book about Tibetan philosophy and she told me that Tulpa is a belief that by meditation and concentration people can materialize thoughts into physical forms. Basically if I envision a ghost, it will appear.
I then recalled my summer camp friend and her peculiar story of Theosophy with last name Tolpa that was really spelled TULPA. Coincidence?
Not sure what all this means but this is indeed a strange coincidence
