WHAT TOWN IN THE MOHAWK VALLEY ARE YOU FROM: I’m originally from Geneva, NY and now I live in New Mexico.
PLEASE TELL YOUR EXTRAORDINARY TALE ABOUT THE MOHAWK VALLEY:
William Morgan is my ancestor. I am the descendant of his cousin. Morgan was an interesting figure that infiltrated the Masons and revealed some of their secrets. For his actions he was diapered but everyone knew he was murdered. Wikipedia states this happened in 1826 and “ignited a powerful movement against the Freemasons.”
Our family story was a bit more horrifying. Basically Morgan was kind of a greedy, selfish guy who was down on his luck after a fire wiped out his farm so he got a crazy idea to write a book about the Freemasons in which he belonged to. In chasing fame and money for this book, he bargained with his own life and the welfare of his family that he would could do it.
But Morgan had actually gone beyond just writing a book, he had actually stolen some sacred items to the Free Masons. Items that they wanted back at any cost. After Morgan announced his intention to publish a book exposing Freemasonry’s secrets, he was arrested on phony charges. The police ransacked his house, assaulted his daughter and his wife and beat his son Thomas close to death.
William Morgan disappeared soon after when the police handed him over to the Masons. They tortured him and killed him but these Masons from western New York, never found their items. They tried like hell and made my family’s life hell in the process. Every once and a while they’d show up at his widow’s house and rough up the place searching for their items, but they were long gone. Thomas had found them and hid them where nobody could find them, under the house. One night he took them and fled to never see his family again. He guarded these items with his life and passed them down to his son who resided in the Town of German Flatts also known as Mohawk, NY. It is said that the items are buried in this mausoleum with his grandson.
According to my Aunt Mary, the items were as follows:
1) A skull, covered in gold that was said to be from the head of one of the founders of the Masons in America. His initials J.M. were carved into the gold that covered his skull. Inside the skull were two items.
2) A quartz crystal / Herkimer Diamond, that changed color and was said to look green when you held it into the light.
3) A key made of gold that was said to open a box created by the first humans for God himself.
The skull was placed inside of a beautifully crafted wooden box covered in latin writing.
I would love to find these items but our family believes there is a curse on them and refuse to request to or will not enter that tomb. I have included links to his Wikipedia page and have attached an image that I took of the mausoleum in the Mohawk cemetery in 2016.
